Lansdowne FC hosted the annual Dublin Hospitals Cup last night at HQ which brought a large crowd of supporters to cheer on St. Vincent's Hospital and The Federated Hospitals as they did battle on the back pitch at the Aviva Stadium.

St. Vincent's came out of the blocks early to test the Federated defence line and came away with an early try.  The first quarter seeing quite a few stoppages and early mistakes from both sides however Federated suffered a yellow card on the seventh minute, their player having been penalised for a deliberate knock on.  St. Vincent's easily tapped it over to bring the score to 10-0.

Federated got into gear with their 14 men and spent the next few phases attacking the clubhouse end with St. Vincent's giving away two crucial penalties.  Federated wisely kicked both to the corner, won their own lineout and mauled over the try line to make it 10-12 at the break.

The second half again saw a period of superb St. Vincent's attacking play.  However it was Federated who scored first again off the forwards to bring the score to 10-17.  Federated inching ahead with each attacking phase, play going inside the Vincent's 22' and the Referee penalised Vincent's for not rolling away within kickable distance of the posts. 10-20.

Vincent's kept their composure and with some fine footballing skills under the high ball and a desire to keep the ball in play were rewarded for their efforts with another try nicely converted to bring the score to within 3 of Federated - 17-20.  With 15 minutes left on the clock it was game on and either team could clinch it at this point.

However it was Federated, again kicking to the corner for a penalty followed by their trademark rolling maul crossed the try line only to be held up by a strong Vincent's defence.  Another opportunity very shortly after following a Vincents goal line dropout saw them score a try almost under the posts.  A quick consultation between referee Ezequiel Roldan Olivera (ARG) and Touch Judge Ramon Lipparoni (RSA) and the try was awarded.  Thus the coup de grâce delivered by Federated to bring the score to 17-27.

Now with only three minutes remaining on the clock, St. Vincent's put on a desperate run of attacking play but it was not to be.  The ball was finally turned over inside the Federated 22 with 3 seconds remaining and deftly kicked to touch.

Federated win, their first and very well earned victory since 1991.

FT Score 17-27

Congratulations to Con Feighery who was awarded the Dublin Hospitals RFC Hall of Fame award 2024 for his lifelong service to the competition.
